In this episode Alexander Taub provides his insights and expertise on business development and partnerships when it comes to startups. In his book, Pitching and Closing, Taub gives you an all-inclusive guide to the best practices of creating a startup in a nontechnical format breaking down the categories of business development, partnerships, sales tactics, preparation, and execution. This book is the perfect match for the entrepreneur interested in startups who does not have the technical capabilities.
About Alex Taub:
“I am the co-author of Pitching and Closing with my good friend Ellen Dasilva. I am also the co-founder of a company called Social Rank which is a simple tool to help brands find out more information about the people that follow them across social networks. For the past two years I ran business development and partnerships for a startup called Dwolla. Two years before that I ran business development for a business called Aviary. I also have a blog called Alex’s Tech Thoughts that I write four posts a week and contribute to Forbes entrepreneur section every two weeks.
I have been writing for four years and one day I got a LinkedIn message from an editor at McGraw Hill asking me if I ever considered writing a book because she really liked my stuff. I hadn’t thought about it before but I said that’s a pretty good idea but I knew I couldn’t pull it off on my own. That’s when I brought in my friend Ellen to co-author the book with me. The inspiration was an editor liked my stuff and I felt like there wasn’t much out there on the topic of business development in partnerships.” – Alex Taub

In this episode Emily Chase Smith provides small business owners with a step-by-step guide to staying financial healthy. In her book, The Financially Savvy Entrepreneur, Chase Smith shows you how to save your financial system from crumbling by teaching you to understand how an entrepreneur's financial decisions are different from others and to establish a business that can stand on its own financially. This book is perfect for the entrepreneur who is searching for a clear process for avoiding the financial consequences that derail so many small businesses.
About Emily Chase Smith:
“I come from an entrepreneurial family; my great grandparents were self-made citrus farmers in Santa Barbara California, my dad has been a self-employed architect for many years and I’m an attorney by education and trade. I morphed that through the experiences I’ve had over the years into being a financial educator for small business.
I had a heavy influence in my legal practice in the area of bankruptcy and I worked primarily with small business owners filing personal bankruptcies. With that I had the chance to be up close and personal in peoples personal and business financial lives. I did this for many years and after a while I started to see some of the same patterns occurring over and over again which was really hard to watch. Working with smart entrepreneurs I realized that if they just had some simple symptoms in place, a lot of them wouldn’t be sitting in my office needing me to file a bankruptcy.” – Emily Chase Smith

In this episode Carol Sanford shares her insights on a special breed of entrepreneurs. In her book, The Responsible Entrepreneur, Sanford gives you the framework to make a difference in the way your business affects the world and maps the journey through 4 archetypes: Realizing Entrepreneurs, Reconnection Entrepreneurs, Reciprocity Entrepreneurs, and Regenerative Entrepreneurs. The Responsible Entrepreneur is the perfect book for entrepreneurs looking to pursue world-changing results or significantly impact investors.
About Carol Sanford:
“I have written several book, the most recent is The Responsible Business and the new one we are talking about today is The Responsible Entrepreneur. I used to be a professional improvisational performer and standup comic.
There are two intersections in my own personal life experience. One is the clients, colleagues and students in universities where I teach that I have seen doing things that I knew at the level of entrepreneurship was possible for everyone to do but it always showed up in magazines in a very funny way. The other thing that was an intersection was I was raised closely by my maternal grandfather who is a descendant of the tribe of Mohawk survivors and he passed along the stories to me of how they rebuilt the nation based on four archetypes that he was exposed to. I saw how I could really explain what was going on with my clients and these amazing leaders in a way that entrepreneurs could take on much bigger change and pull more together than they knew was possible.”

In this episode, best-selling author and epic storyteller, Jon Gordon paints the perfect picture in how to properly create a start up from the ground up. Jon's book The Carpenter highlights many success stories and business strategies for the entrepreneur looking to outlast others alike. Jon presents a strong main idea that you shouldn't focus on building your business, you should focus on using your business to love, serve and care and with that mentality your business will grow exponentially.
About Jon Gordon:
“I am a writer and a speaker who has written a number of books notably The Energy Bus. Most importantly I’m a husband and a dad to two children who are now 16 and 14. I also work with a lot of professional sports teams, college teams, companies, school districts and I am really passionate about developing positive leaders, organizations and teams.
It all started with a Carpenter that came to my house for some work. It was during the recession and I asked him how business was with the expectation that it probably wasn’t doing so well. It was his response that took me by surprise. He had been busier than ever. Average Carpenters weren’t doing well, but the great ones, the ones who stood out in the market place, they were thriving! He cared about his work and cared about his clients and I realized that the greatest success strategies of all are to love, serve and care. Those who care more, do more. So the idea of caring more and the idea of how to stand out more in your work was the inspiration behind writing this book.” – Jon Gordon

Business in Blue Jeans is designed to be as close to the experience of working with Susan Baroncini-Moe one on one. When you read the book it is very much like the way she works with her clients. She starts with letting you know that you aren’t alone, giving you examples of things you need to know. The other thing is this book is based on fundamentals and we all need those fundamentals because if your business isn’t growing its most liking you need to find out what fundamentals you’re missing. It is written for people who are starting a business and people who are in growth.
About Susan Baroncini-Moe:
“I am the CEO of a company called Business in Blue Jeans. We are a digital marketing and consulting firm. We do full scale marketing all the way down from teaching/training you, to doing it for you. I also do a lot of business coaching and work with a large variety of all kinds of clients for the past 16 years or so.
I have always wanted to write a book but wasn’t sure what that would be. After working with a lot of people, I found myself saying the same things, and realized a book was a good resource for those that couldn’t afford to hire a coach. I thought I should really put this in book format so people can get a taste of my philosophy of doing business and how I do it differently.” – Susan Baroncini-Moe

Lean Customer Development shows you why you need customer development and its set to arm you with the facts you need to overcome the initial resistance that you might get from your organization. Cindy Alvarez teaches you that customers don’t always know what they want but they can’t hide what they need. Her book provides you with the real questions you need to be asking customers in order to figure out their problems and needs.
About Cindy Alvarez:
“I have been working at startups for the past 15 years and a couple years ago the startup I was at was acquired by Microsoft so now I also have some experience working within an extremely large company. In working with those companies of all sizes I saw that people were struggling to talk to their customers so figured I should write a book about it. I have written the book Lean Customer Development to give companies of all sizes a practical guide to get people talking to customers and challenging their ideas.
Companies know that they should be forming hypothesis and validating them, but what I have seen is that companies are trying to do that validation with a really outdated tool box. Companies used to use analysis reports, focus groups and those used to work in a world where software was released on 3 , 5 and 10 year cycles but they are just too slow for people to use today. We have companies who want to talk to their customers, who want to challenge their ideas but they aren’t really sure how. I wanted to make sure that they had a guide so that they can read the book and feel comfortable enough doing this.” – Cindy Alvarez

Inside The Box is the only book that details the method called systematic inventive thinking. Most of the books you deal with today on this topic are more about the why or how you execute innovation. Drew Boyd and Jacob Goldenberg wrote the book with the intent to give people a way to understand creativity, the method, and the cognitive tools of how you use your brain in a different way to produce novel ideas you weren’t likely to produce without the method.
About Drew Boyd:
“I am a professor at the University of Cincinnati but I’m really a corporate guy. I’ve been in large organizations for over 30 years and 17 of those years were at the global healthcare company, Johnson and Johnson which is where I learned this method that the book is about.
It is really inspired from two perspectives; one is my time at Johnson & Johnson. We were very desperate to find an innovation method to create new medical products and we spent millions of dollars looking for a method. Just by chance I happen to find out about this method called systematic inventive thinking and we realized immediately that it was special, that it worked very well and I continued to practice it over the last 12 years. A few years later I met my co-author Dr. Jacob Goldenberg, it is his research that this method is based on. He and I became friends, started teaching and working together when he asked if I wanted to write a book together. Without even thinking about it I said yes.” – Drew Boyd

As a business owner you know you need marketing but you do not know where to start. Al Lautenslager and Jay Conrad Levinson give you that starting point in Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days. It is really common sense types of things but not necessarily common practice. Wade interviews Al in this episode to discuss that path, one step in front of the other, that road map, for the marketing that you need to do for business.
About Al Lautenslager:
“I am an author, speaker and marketing consultant. I travel the world talking about various marketing strategies for those that are interested in growing a business to do so with low and no cost marketing tactics. I’ve been a business owner for fifteen years; I owned a printing and mailing business in the city of Chicago and spent time in corporate America before that. Parallel to my business ownership I started doing a lot of marketing consulting with small businesses. I sold that business in 2009 and focus today on consulting. I am an author of six marketing books and am really passionate about fulfilling my mission of helping businesses grow with low and no cost marketing.
I am a former business owner and coming out of the corporate world with a marketing background I had to enter the trenches and start marketing from my boot straps on day one. I did that based on my corporate marketing experience and based on my education, very successfully. I started helping other businesses do that because they saw my success and wanted to know what I was doing and how I could help them. I was asked to speak to their chamber of commerce, their franchise or their organizations and come to find out I really enjoyed that. People were walking away with immediately actionable tactics that they could use the same day they heard about it. I asked someone I knew in the speaking business how to leverage this speaking thing that I have just been asked to do. How do you make money doing that? He said I have to position myself in such a way that you are the absolute go to person and that means writing a book. I decided to get an endorsement from Jay Conrad Levinson, the father of Guerrilla marketing. That is when we came up with the idea of Guerrilla Marketing in 30 days. I asked Jay if he would co-author it with me and he agreed to.” – Al Lautenslager

A lot of books deal with steps to innovation and they argue whether seven steps are better than twelve. Cause A Disturbance delivers a very practical way of understanding your business a little better, to understand your customer and to understand how to keep engaging with new, better and improved ideas. If you are an innovative entrepreneur, this book interview is for you.
About Ken Tencer:
“I started, built and sold a manufacturing firm 20 years ago and moved on to services where I help other entrepreneurs understand a little bit about the opportunities they have in front of them. I know what it’s like to get something going from scratch and all the fun and games along the way.
The inspiration comes from lot of people I’ve spoken to. I’ve been very fortunate since our first book came out in 2010 to speak to and to do workshops with thousands of people around the world. One thing that stuck out was they all seemed to have this mystical idea of innovation that it was monumental; that you had to be a large company and I just didn’t see it that way. I really wanted to let people know that it’s just not that hard.” - Ken Tencer

The Entrepreneurs Library was established to create quality book reviews on the books that every Entrepreneur should own and read. As a serial entrepreneur myself, I am always looking for that next nugget, that next tweak I can make to take myself and my business to the next level. This podcast is for those that see the true power of reading and subtle addiction to applying new content.
It’s through reading that I have been able to start a company and take it from 0 to a multimillion dollar company in just a few short years. Mentorship is not always easy to find but there are so many great books out there to help build your business. Our businesses end up being a test lab where we are able to read and then apply new attitudes and techniques. Many of you are just like me and there is almost a Christmas morning type feeling when you open that brand new book for the first time. You are not sure what you are going to get but you hope and wish it will be something revolutionary. We are looking to give you a hint of what’s in the book before you even purchase or read it.
My goal is to take a deep dive with the author and focus on the book at hand. Our slogan is It’s All About The Book for a reason. Most interviews focus 90% on the author and 10% on the book. We are changing that up! If you are like me, when you are looking for your next great book, you ask around, google “great business books” or you hit up Amazon. Besides looking at their reviews it is difficult to know what the book is all about. I used to read everything I could get my hands on but now I try to focus on specific areas where I need to grow, I don’t like starting books that aren’t relevant to what I am seeking. We are going to make these interviews thorough so by the end of listening you will know if the book we discussed is the next big book that is going to catapult your business.
We will focus on a few key areas that Entrepreneurs focus on. Books on selling, marketing, relationships, innovation, building/scaling your business, hiring/firing, attitude , productivity just to name a few. We will create a resource for entrepreneurs to listen to before they buy their next audio book or paper bound. Busyness can be an entrepreneurs enemy but productivity is the name of the game! We are here to help!
